He opened his eyes in the early morning light to the sounds of her tossing and turning. She was having another nightmare. He turned over to face her, but refrained from trying to wake her. He knew that eventually she would startle awake and be scared, and he wanted to be there to calm her.
As expected, she bolted upright, sweat and tears streaming down her face. Heart racing, panting and looking around wildly as her eyes adjusted to being open. She called out for him.
"I'm here, it's all right. It was a dream." he replied, his voice low and even.
She moved closer to him and they fell into the instinctive position of cuddling. He wrapped an arm around her and let the other move his hand up and down her back, calming her.
This didn't happen often, but when it did, he knew what to do. He always seemed to know what to do, even at times when he didn't think he knew what to do. It was a little odd to him really, but he didn't think too much about it. He just tried to keep doing what he needed to do for her, because he loved her.
Eventually she fell back into a calmer sleep, but he was now wide awake. He moved his hand from her back and began gently stroking her hair and her cheek, wiping away what was left of the tears. Such fierce emotion came from her at times. He'd seen it all. Joy, anger, grief, love…sometimes all at once.
She wasn't the first emotional woman to come into his life. And while she would always be the most important, he knew that the others had come into his life for a reason and sometimes he understood the reasons, and sometimes he didn't.
He used to think to himself, "Why do I always seem to attract women with self esteem issues?"
He knew now. He knew it was to prepare him for her. For the woman he'd love for the rest of his life.
And she would always be precious to him.
